Supporting independence skills at home

Supporting independence skills at home

Description:

Learning to become increasingly independent starts from a very young age. You may notice this as your baby attempts to feed themselves, or as toddlers insist on doing things independently. Providing your child with the opportunity to make simply choices supports their development of independence and understanding that their opinion matters. Although it may take a little longer, allowing your child to do things themselves helps to support their learning and development.

Promote learning by:

For very young children, offering choices and opportunities such as helping to put their toys away, participate in cooking experiences, feeding themselves solids or milk are great ways to support their independence.  As children get older, you can offer further opportunities such as dressing themselves, making their bed, drinking from a cup, dusting shelves/ wiping down tables, setting the table, watering plants, gardening- the possibilities are endless!
